Organizations Are Doomed Unless...
You have probably seen the movie based on the true story of the 1991 fishing boat that was confronted by three raging weather fronts which unexpectedly collide to produce the greatest, fiercest storm in modern history -- "The Perfect Storm." A similar disaster is looming over organizations with four major forces looming in the future and about to collide!
- Performance Reviews Are a Waste of Time and Money... Deloitte, the global audit, tax and advisory services firm estimates they spend 2 million hours per year on performance appraisals. Like many companies they have not seen much impact on productivity as a result. On average, a typical,10,000-employee company spends about $35 million a year on reviews.
- Millennials say they have been blindsided by a performance review (at least 62% of them) , and 59% say their manager is unprepared to provide feedback during their reviews. Performance Appraisals actually decrease productivity and in one study of Human Resource professionals, 90% said these reviews are "painful and ineffective."
- In most organizations, performance management programs are not driven in a top down manner. That is, the CEO does not have effective performance/coaching discussions with his/her direct reports.
- Many organizations are getting rid of performance reviews altogether and replacing them with frequent "check ins" or "coaching conversations." Unfortunately most leaders are ill-prepared to have these discussions.
